The Aquaponics greenhouse is the main component of Sun Diego Farms. Everything needed to grow the fish and plants comes from within the greenhouse and no external feed is brought in. We take great pride in experimenting with 100% organic, self sufficient systems.
The fish tank, holding 15,000 tilapia, is the centerpiece of the greenhouse and provides nutrients to the plants.
Tilapia feeding at the surface of the tank. In addition to the tilapia the tank also holds multiple Pacu, a cousin to the piranha.
The water is pumped from the fish tank into multiple troughs throughout the greenhouse. We change the vegetables in the troughs often depending on seasons and demand.
We also have papayas growing throughout the greenhouse and are pushing the limits with what we can grow in a closed loop aquaponics system.
Plant variability is important to push the boundaries of what can be grown in our system and to bring unique plants to market. In the trough above we are growing Ung Choy (water spinach).
Our plants thrive because they are being fed the highest levels of nutrients possible. We take great pride in never using pesticides or adding external nutrients to our system.
Our greenhouse is constantly changing to allow the most yield per square foot and to allow easy harvesting.
